Reality Virtual Continuum

The reality virtuality continuum is a scale that was developed to determine a mark between reality and the virtual world. This continuum is able to put into perspective the amount of virtuality used in any given situation, and the amount of reality. The middle of this would be mixed reality. I think that this is a really interesting concept and I believe that it will continue to grow, be studied, and incorporated as extended reality continues to grow in our world.

VR — Virtual Reality

Virtual reality is a technology that creates a whole 3D world that can be experienced and interacted with by the individual. Virtual reality is what I’m most familiar with since I have been able to experience it. My brothers have a VR system and it is incredible to me that a realistic virtual world like that is possible. My experience with VR has been all for entertainment, and it can entertain for hours. One time I was able to travel all over the world and experience places as if I was actually walking down the street there, it was incredible. I even went to places that I have been to in real life and it was amazing how real the virtual reality experience made it seem since I was able to compare real life and virtual life.

AR — Augmented Reality

Augmented reality adds virtual elements to already real elements. An example of this is Pokemon Go because you are seeing your real elements, but the augmented reality adds features that aren’t actually there. My experience with AR has been all for entertainment, and it can entertain for hours.

MR — Mixed Reality

Mixed reality is a mix between augmented reality and virtual reality. The user is able to interact with both real life and virtual objects and experiences. An example of this that I am familiar with is using mixed reality to create 3D models of homes, buildings, or interior design to show a client what the designs will look like. I am in Design and Construction Management and am going to get my masters in Interior Architecture, so I will be using mixed reality a lot in my career.

XR — Extended Reality

Extended reality is the umbrella term for all of these different forms of the virtual world. All interactions created by technology can be extended reality. Extended reality is often times used for educational purposes, entertainment, and many other things. The possibilities for extended reality are endless and it is amazing that this technology is here and expanding.

Immersive Experience Design

Immersive experience design is any design that allows the user to immerse and interact with it. Immersive design can include VR, MR, and AR. Immersive design is getting bigger and bigger in our world and can be very helpful for many occupancies, education, and even just entertainment. Immersive design allows for users to dive deeper into what they are experiencing which can be so important and advance our world and the way we live.
